Bloody Gulch is a custom map for Darkest of Days, a first-person shooter video game developed by 8monkey Labs. It was made using the level editor Habitat released by the developers. But it'll serve as the name of this site as well. Getting a level editor that's pretty powerful, and I'm finding pretty easy to use, is a great tool for scripting out complex scenes with AI interacting with each other or triggering other events that can be played out and captured software like Fraps. There's even a 'cut scene' mode that turns the players viewpoint into a camera that can zoom and track objects. It really opens up the possiblity for doing machinima. This test below, with the exception of the titles and credits, was done in one take. The 'player/camera' was scripted to teleport to the next position, based on the timing of the scenarios. In addtion to the Civil War there's WWI german and russian armies as well as Roman soldiers and citizens of Pompeii...not to mention Custer and the combined forces of Lakota and Northern Cheyenne tribes. If that's not enough extras and their props to cast and shoot a machinima hollywood blockbuster, then I don't know what it'd take. You get to play Cecil B. DeMille, John Huston and Howard Hughes all rolled into one. |
